Ford F-150 Is The 2018 Motor Trend Truck Of The Year

Ford took a big risk completely overhauling the 2018 Ford F-150. Here at Hub City Ford, and at Ford dealerships across the country, we didn't know what to expect when they finally unveiled the renovated 2018 model. There were rumors of replacing 700 pounds of steel parts with aluminum, a metal both stronger and lighter. There was news about the possibility of souped up engines and a more intuitive cab interface, but some critics had doubts about the decision to delay production with such a comprehensive redesign. When the 2018 Ford F-150 was released, all our questions were answered and the critics were silenced; the new redesign of this classic truck blew its competition out of the water and won the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award.

Attention to Detail Pays Off

The 2018 Ford F-150 is a masterclass in detail-oriented auto design. Ford re-evaluated every aspect of the F-150 and came out with a truck that leaps into the future of truck performance, while retaining the classic feel of this Ford powerhouse. With a new powertrain lineup, the upper trims of the Ford F-150 can get up to 450 horsepower and 510 foot-pounds of torque or, in other words, this truck can haul. Cutting deadweight by replacing steel with aluminum freed up more towing capacity, increased power-to-weight ratios, and reduced the number of parts subject to rust damage. Steering and handling are vastly improved from the 2015 model, and the Raptor Supercrew trim touts an impressive six second 0 to 60. Ford's under-the-hood renovations alone make this 2018 redesign well worth the wait.

Motor Trend Truck of the Year

"Nothing really came close," said road test editor Chris Walton after the Ford F-150's debut at the Motor Trend test site. To win the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award, the F-150 had to compete against a slew of other trucks in a series of performance tests, all monitored by a panel of automotive experts. The judges evaluate each truck based on six criteria:

  • Design Advancement
  • Engineering Excellence
  • Efficiency
  • Safety
  • Value
  • Performance of Intended Function

After receiving the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year, the Ford F-150 went on to achieve an NHTSA five star safety rating, the highest rating available. Overall, the 2018 Ford F-150 is a top tier truck in terms of safety and performance, with a sharp new redesign that makes it a contemporary classic.
